Archives Research Service

If you can't visit the Record Office in person, or need a bit of help along the way, we have several services that can help. All of these are available to you no matter where you are in the world.

Research Service

Our highly effective researcher can look into specific documents or questions on your behalf. Charged by the hour, you will receive a detailed report, including details of all the documents consulted. This service is a cost-effective alternative to travelling long distances to visit us in person. If you need a little help while you are here, then a consultation meeting with our researcher could be just what you need to open up new areas of research of to overcome a "brick wall."

Sometimes, even with a high resolution digital image, old documents can be hard to read, due to changes in spelling and handwriting style over the centuries. Our experts can create a transcription and save you a great deal of time and effort.

Our translation service means that you no longer have to try to remember long-ago Latin lessons at school!

Historic Environment Record searches

If you are interested in a particular location, then you might want to consider a report showing historic buildings and landscapes as well as archaeological finds. For more information please visit the Historic Environment Record page and the Portable Antiquities Scheme page.
