A general practitioner (GP) is a family medical doctor based in the community who treats patients with minor or chronic illnesses, orders tests, and makes referrals to specialists. They are the local gatekeepers for medical services and are typically your first point of contact with the NHS. GPs usually take over from paediatricians when young people turn 18 years-old.

People aged 14+ with learning disabilities who are known to their local authority social services, and who are registered with a GP (who knows their medical history) are entitled to a free annual health check.
