The Educational Psychology Service (EPS) work to promote positive child development and learning through the application of psychology. The South Team covers Northampton, Daventry, and South Northants.
The EPS help children and young people overcome barriers to successful learning. These barriers might arise from:
- Learning difficulties and special educational needs (SEN)
- Behavioural, social or emotional needs
- Physical, medical or sensory needs
The EPS may be contacted for help and advice by:
- Schools or early years settings
- Health professionals
- Additional needs teachers
- Pre-school staff
- Social workers
- Other professionals working with children
The EPS will offer consultation on concerns raised and agree an action plan. If the concern is about a child, parental permission must have been given before they will be involved.
The EPS provide Targeted Mental Health in Schools (TAMHS), a coordinated multi-agency programme for building capacity within schools through training, support and introducing new programmes and approaches to better meet the mental health needs of all children.
Those schools with a Service Level Agreement can directly request the support of a Psychology Assistant to work at individual or group work level with children and young people presenting with social, emotional and behavioural needs.
They are a small team of staff with an academic background in psychology and experience of working with pupils with additional needs in schools. All of their work is managed and supervised by an Educational Psychologist. The Psychology Assistants can offer a menu of structured intervention programmes which are usually delivered on a weekly sessional basis. Their support may be focused on:
- increasing self-awareness
- helping children to understand and regulate their emotions
- anger management
- coping with anxiety
- increasing motivation
- using mindfulness
- cognitive behavioural approaches
- developing coping strategies
- tackling emotionally-based school avoidance
- supporting transitions
Please contact Rachel Eastwood (Area Principal Educational Psychologist, Northamptonshire West), Yvonne Needham (Senior Educational Psychologist, Daventry/SW area) or contact the Psychology Assistants directly at One Angel Square on telephone number 01604 364770 (ask for Natasha Davies or Holly Marriott), or at the William Knibb Centre on 01604 361416 (ask for Naomi Cumberland or Preanka Tailor) if you would like further information and / or wish to commission support.
