Vernon Terrace is a mixed community primary school. It has an SEN unit that provides education, support, and facilities for children who have a hearing impairment and additional needs. Vernon Terraces' 'Total Communication Approach' is recognised as one of its strengths and allows true inclusion.

Peer Group

The provision for hearing impaired children offers regular peer group sessions every Tuesday afternoon. The sessions promote language development through social interaction with adults and peers. The peer group is very important to the children who attend. It gives them a sense of belonging, builds their confidence and establishes new friendships. As well as being a group where they are able to develop and support language development through fun engaging activities.

The peer group is a great opportunity for a child to meet with others who understand the issues and challenges they may be facing. If you are interested in joining the peer group please contact the school for more information.

Accessibility Plan

This school has an Accessibility Plan (as part of the local authority’s Schools’ Accessibility Strategy 2016-2019 (PDF 487KB). This means it has adaptations for pupils with disabilities that are over and above what is required under general planning and building regulations. As a minimum, the school will have:

  • Physical access to all areas of curriculum (this may not be 100% of the school building).
  • Suitable parking and a suitable entrance to the school.
  • A suitable changing facility for pupils with disabilities.
  • A designated area for physiotherapy or similar treatments.
  • Specialist furniture (e.g. variable height tables and other physical aids.
