In line with the latest government policy the SEND Support Service are not offering face to face meetings or workshops, but we will continue to provide the service as effectively as possible whilst working from home.
Support and advice can be accessed by requesting a telephone consultation with one of our practitioners and this can be arranged by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, preferred contact number, the area where you live, the child’s age and a brief description of what you would like to discuss.
Online referrals can still be made for children who are eligible but we will be unable to offer any face to face contact and contact will be via telephone and email.
The SEND Support Service offers advice and support to children, young people, families, carers and a range of educational establishments for children with a wide range of special educational needs and / or autism, aged 0 to 19 years.

Consultations can be made from anyone seeking advice for an individual child. This is an opportunity to seek advice and support from one of our practitioners .
- Consultations are usually for about an hour and are for parents or carers to attend without the child or young person
- Consultations are anonymous (i.e. the child’s name is not disclosed) and can be through a telephone conversation or face to face at our offices
Consultations may be by telephone or face to face and held in different areas of the county (Northampton, Daventry, Wellingborough, Kettering or Corby). Appointments are available between 9am and 5pm. Please state your preferred location when booking an appointment.

It would be helpful if you could give us the following details: Name, address and date of birth of the child or young person (parents only - professional consultations can remain unnamed) and a brief background and what you hope would be the outcome of a consultation. You will then be contacted with dates available.

How can I check if a child is eligible for support?
The eligibility criteria below has been designed to ensure we support those children and young people most in need and is linked to the
SEND Descriptors for education.
Access to the SEND Support Service is not based on diagnosis.
Each referral will need to evidence that the child is showing these areas of need either at home or in their mainstream setting, school or educational establishment.
Children or young people who may not be accepted by the SEND Support Service
- If the child or young person (aged 5 to 19 years) is receiving support from a number of other services, it may not be appropriate for the SEND Support Service to accept the referral at this time.
- If you are requesting support leading towards a diagnosis (e.g. ASD, ADHD) the correct route would be via your GP.
The service does not support the Education, Health and Care process for children and young people who are not already known to us.
The service does not provide respite or care packages.
The service does not provide direct support within specialist provision or within independent schools.
How do I make a referral?
If you are a parent and would like to refer, the team will provide support for you at home only. Support within an educational setting needs to be requested by that setting. We require a referral to give examples and evidence of the child or young person’s needs within the relevant areas of eligibility. Referrals may be declined if there is insufficient evidence presented on the referral.
Schools and other professionals
- Early Years (children aged 0-4) referrals require a fully completed Early Years Developmental Profile; a One Page Profile; evidence of Assess, Plan, Do, Review implementation.
- School age referrals (Rising 5 to 19) referrals require a clear outcome of work stated in the appropriate section of the form.
- Referrals without the required 3 areas of need evidenced may not be considered by the panel.

What happens when a child is referred?
Once we have received a referral, a panel meeting takes place to agree whether the child is eligible and to decide the best service offer based on the information provided and further assessment.
These panel meetings take place fortnightly around the region.
What support may be offered by the SEND Support Service?
- Consultations for parents, carers and schools.
- A range of
courses and workshops.
- Early years: Assessment, home teaching, advice and signposting which may be delivered by a trained Portage Volunteer.
- Advice or support at home to child or young person regarding specific areas of need.
- Assessment of learning environment and development of appropriate interventions and strategies in schools or settings.
- Support and advice at times of transition to new schools or settings.
- Information about the statutory assessment process or criteria for education health and care plans.
- Advice and support to the whole family of a child or young person with SEND, which may lead to an Early Help Assessment.
- For children or young people who are educated at home, the service may provide support to adapt the learning environment.
- If the child or young person lives within Northamptonshire, the team may provide support within educational settings in bordering counties.
