School Workforce Census

The School Workforce Census is a statutory data collection managed by the Department of Education (DfE) that takes place each autumn. You must complete statutory censuses by law unless there’s a good reason not to.

The census collects data on all teaching and support staff in regular employment

Further information can be found on the DfE's web page School Workforce Census.

School workforce census feedback 2014

Congratulations, between us we achieved a 100% submission rate - thank you.

Overall there was an improvement in data quality compared to previous returns, enabling us to complete our return earlier.

There were a number of non system errors with regard to completing the census:

  1. Where queries and errors had not been resolved, schools had not provided the reason why.

Initially the census returns included a number of errors and queries:

The most common being:

  • Missing contracts on employees
  • Base pay is less than £11.00
  • Base pay not provided

And 219 queries, the most common being:

  • Overlapping absence records
  • Missing national insurance number
  • Full time equivalent greater than 1
  • Full time equivalent hours expected to be between 24 and 40 Hours
  • Missing teacher numbers

We have worked with bursars to resolve as many errors and queries as possible in order that their data will meet the data requirements of the schools workforce census and prevent them being replicated in the 2015 Census.
