Training

​The Virtual School provides training regarding the education of looked-after and previously looked-after children. Please do contact us if you have a training request that is not covered below.

Please find details of upcoming training courses in the 2021 to 2022 academic year listed below. Selecting a training date will open a sign-up page on Eventbrite, through which tickets can be acquired. All training events will be delivered remotely, and are provided free of charge.

New to the Role of Designated Teacher for Looked-after and / or Previously Looked-after Children (PLAC)

Target audience: designated teachers for looked-after and/or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11, who are new to the role.

Course description: This course gives an overview of the requirements upon the Designated Teacher to fulfil their role effectively for both looked-after children and previously looked-after children. Topics covered include:

  • voice of the child
  • pupil premium plus
  • raising awareness and staff training
  • SEN mental health
  • partnership working
  • admissions

Training dates

Refresher Designated Teacher Training

Target audience: It is recommended that experienced designated teachers for looked-after and/or previously looked-after children from reception to Year 11, attend this training once every three years.

Course description: This course gives an overview of the requirements upon the designated teacher to fulfil their role effectively for both looked-after children and previously looked-after children. Topics covered include:

  • voice of the child
  • pupil premium plus
  • raising awareness and staff training
  • SEN
  • mental health
  • partnership working
  • admissions

PEP Quality Training

Target audience: School staff and social workers with access to PEPs. 

Course description: this course explores the expectations the Virtual School has to ensure each section of the PEP is high quality. Participants will be given an overview of why each section of the PEP is important and the kinds of responses that are both good and poor.

Governor Training

Target audience: Nominated governors for looked-after and previously looked-after children; interested governors and Chairs. 

Course description: This course covers the importance of governors advocating for looked-after and previously looked-after children (LAC and PLAC); how to support and challenge the designated teacher to ensure all LAC and PLAC are receiving a high quality education which suits their individual needs; and also learn more about the processes and policies associated with LAC and PLAC including Pupil Premium Plus funding.

Social Care and Virtual School Partnership Working

Target audience: Social workers of children in care to Northamptonshire Children's Trust.

Course description: This course gives an overview of how social workers can effectively promote the education of looked-after children through partnership working with the Virtual School. There will be an opportunity to ask general education questions that are not covered in the session. Topics covered include:

  • Think parent
  • School moves and applications
  • Special Educational Needs and EHC plans
  • Good communication with school
  • Non-mainstream schools
  • The PEP

Training dates

Parents and Guardians of Previously Looked-after Children: Promoting the Education of Previously Looked-after Children (PLAC)

Target audience: Parents and guardians of children from reception to Year 11 who were previously in state care and have been adopted, or made subject to a special guardianship/child arrangements order. If your child is outside this age range you are welcome to attend.

Course description: This session looks at how parents or guardians can work with schools effectively to support their child's education. It explores the duties schools have regarding previously looked-after children and advises on how parents or guardians can best advocate for their child. Areas covered include:

  • educational achievement of PLAC
  • what schools must do
  • relationship building with school
  • pupil premium+
  • information sharing
  • admissions
  • choosing a good school
