Service description:
The Children's Occupational Therapy Service works with referred babies and children to enable them to achieve their optimum level of independence in all aspects of personal and domestic activities of daily living, play and learning, leisure and school work.

The service provides a non-specialist but comprehensive package of therapy for service users from birth to 18 years. Service users may have an acute or developmental condition and/or a lifelong disability.

Occupational therapists (OTs) work in partnership with these individuals and their families and with other professionals and agencies to anticipate, respond to and reduce the impact of a child's difficulties on their wellbeing and ability to participate in daily life. They assess how involvement in everyday activities is being compromised, what environmental facilitators or barriers exist and the capacity for change at an individual or environmental level.

The Children's Occupational Therapy Service works out of two bases. In the north of the county the service is based within the Children's Treatment Unit at Kettering General Hospital and in the south of the county it is based within Westgate House, Gambrel Road, Northampton.

There are also outreach clinics around the county and contact takes place in the setting which is most appropriate to the type of therapy input required, for example at school, within the home or hospital.

Specific interventions include:

Short term acute conditions
Assess, treat, monitor and support
Provision of loaned equipment
Advice to parents and carers on condition management
