Purpose of the role

A flood warden can support their community in areas that are prone to flooding and support the development of the emergency and flood plan. Support the community in identifying areas in the community that are causing flooding and reporting them and coordinating the community in a flooding emergency.


What tasks may be involved?

  • Learn about flood risk
  • Identify the flooding problems
  • Support local group and help develop community emergency and flood plans with your knowledge of the local flood risk
  • Engage with the community
  • Monitor the state of the watercourses and problem areas within your community
  • Ensure regular maintenance is being carried out
  • Identify properties of potentially vulnerable residents
  • Sign up for warnings
  • Report flooding when it is safe to do so.
  • Collect flood event information provided you can do so safely.
  • Attend the relevant training courses.
  • Keep NCC informed of wardens’ contact details

What qualities or skills would be useful?

  • Good communication skills
  • Good local knowledge
