Residents will be able to swim at one of Northamptonshire's most beautiful country parks this summer as open water swimming sessions begin this week.
A summer-long series of open water swimming sessions at Sywell Country Park offers the chance to swim in a safe and controlled environment.
Public sessions are planned every Saturday from 8am to 10am starting on 01 June 2019 until 28 September 2019 and are open to all ages and abilities.
In the first event of its kind for the county, the scheme is being supported by Northamptonshire Sport and Northants Triathlon, with strict safety management designed by Royal Life Saving Society.
At least two qualified lifeguards, session leaders and two spotters will supervise sessions to make them as safe as possible for swimmers.
Sywell Country Park exists on the site of a former drinking water reservoir near the village of Sywell in East Northamptonshire. The reservoir was built at the turn of the 20th century to supply water to the Higham Ferrers and Rushden areas.
Director of Northamptonshire Sport, Chris Holmes said:
“Open water swimming is a great way to explore the outdoors from a totally different perspective, it’s freedom, adventure and fun all rolled together.
“As well as those chasing an adrenaline rush, outdoor swimming is also luring existing swimmers looking for something different, often after growing bored of their regular swimming pool experience.
“While you’ll need to be a competent swimmer, you don’t have to be a superstar to take on open water – it’s a fairly simple transition from the pool."
Leader of Northamptonshire County Council, Cllr Matt Golby, said:
"We're excited to bring one of the UK's fastest growing sports to one the county's most popular country parks this summer.
"Sywell Country Park is the ideal venue for open water swimming locally, and we hope people enjoy swimming in the clean waters amongst the stunning Northamptonshire countryside.
"I would emphasise that this permission is for managed open water swimming under strictly controlled circumstances and does not open the park up for swimming outside of scheduled events."
