A ground-breaking scheme to make young drivers safer on the roads has been shortlisted for two prestigious national awards.

Northamptonshire County Council’s CarKraft scheme, which has helped over 10,000 young drivers, has been shortlisted for two national road safety awards, in recognition of its commitment to improving road safety skills for young people.

The county council’s CarKraft project has been chosen as a finalist in the 2017 Road Safety Scheme of the Year at The Highways Awards and the Vulnerable Road Users Safety category at The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

CarKraft, delivered by Northamptonshire Highways, gives young people the chance to experience driving in a controlled environment and helps youngsters enhance their driving and road safety skills.

The scheme was first introduced in 2001 as a direct response to the number of young driver casualties occurring in Northamptonshire and now intensive information and skills days take place at Silverstone Circuit and Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Highways and Environment, Cllr Ian Morris, said:

I am delighted the CarKraft project has been recognised in these prestigious national awards. This fantastic initiative with our police partners was designed to equip young people in Northamptonshire with vital skills and training essential to drive safely and encourage the highest standards on the road.”

Working in partnership with Northamptonshire Police, CarKraft offers a wealth of skills and training for young people, including workshops with Police Advanced Drivers, and sessions tackling young drivers’ attitudes to risk, and defensive driving skills.

John Spencer, Team Leader for Road Safety and Travel Choices at Northamptonshire Highways, said:

Our CarKraft Driver Improvement Scheme is a testament to the principles of partnership collaboration and directing resources to where they are most needed.

“The courses are tailored specifically to impart a dynamic mix of workshops and driving challenges designed to influence behavioural change, skills limitations and complacent attitudes.

“As a sustainable intervention CarKraft has helped to equip many thousands of young drivers with additional skills, knowledge and confidence to meet the demands of our modern road network.

“We are grateful for the continued support of our partners Renault UK and Adrian Flux Insurance.”

The Highway Awards, formerly Highways Magazine Excellence Awards, showcase a host of innovative, collaborative, efficient, safe and sustainable highway schemes, teams and products. Northamptonshire Highways have been shortlisted for the 2017 Road Safety Scheme of the Year.

CILT’s Annual Awards are designed to recognise achievement and to encourage the highest standards and a professional approach to the practice of logistics, transport and operations. Northamptonshire Highways has been selected as a finalist in the Vulnerable Road Users Safety category.
